Thomas Cuba Obituary

Thomas A Cuba, 73, passed away in the afternoon of February 14th at the Reading Hospital. Tom was born to the late Richard and Maxine Cuba on December 12th, 1952, raised in Emporium and Hermitage PA, and held his final residence in Mohnton PA. Tom married his beloved wife Dorene (Urey) on June 30th, 1973, sharing 52 years with her. He is survived by his cherished sister Carol Stauffer (Gerald, deceased) and their family; two sons Jared and Nathan Cuba (Kristy), grandchildren Kyle and Kari Cuba, Gavin and Bryson Wrightson, and grandson Elijah.

Tom graduated Hickory Senior High School in Hermitage in 1970, and went on to graduate with an Associate Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Pennsylvania State University in 1972. His career spanned from working in Newport News (VA) Shipbuilding on US Navy submarines, to domestic and international power plant piping layout with Gilbert/Commonwealth LLC and RPA Engineering, until choosing to retire in 2018.

He was an active member of the St. John Baptist de la Salle Roman Catholic Church since 1980, where he faithfully served in the Eucharistic and Lector Ministries.

Tom was an avid member of many sporting associations, officiating high school football for 49 years and college football for 14 years, and he took great pride in being able to participate in many high-profile games including umpiring the Big 33 Football Classic in 2002, officiating multiple state championships, and holding multiple offices of the Reading Chapter of the PIAA Football Officials. He was active as a PIAA Wrestling Official, serving in various roles for 31 years, and was inducted into the Berks Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame for his contributions. Tom also had a deep interest in trains and railroads, joining the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical and Historical Society in 1976, and Friends of the East Broad Top Railroad in 2023.  He was also a member of the Reading Buccaneers Drum and Bugle Corps from 1974-77.

Tom lived his life with love and compassion for those around him. His absence from the lives of his friends, family, and associates will be felt long after his funeral, but the treasured love he left in the hearts of us who knew him will endure much longer.
